Many celeb weddings have extravagant gowns and star-studded guest
lists, but most fall short when compared to the royal spectacle of PRINCE
CHARLES' nuptials to LADY DIANA SPENCER on July 29th, 1981. More than 750
million people around the world tuned in to watch the 20-year-old English
schoolteacher ride Cinderella-like through London's streets in a glass
coach. The Princess of Wales wore a poofy wedding gown made from 40 yards
of ivory English silk with a 25-foot-long train, and the 2,500 guests at
St. Paul's Cathedral tittered as she fumbled over her husband-to-be's
name, calling him "Philip Charles Arthur George" instead of
CHARLES PHILIP ARTHUR GEORGE. But the crowds outside went wild when they
kissed on the balcony of Buckingham Palace.
The one-stop bridal Web site, Brides.com,
names Charles and Diana among their list of top 10 weddings of all time,
along with GRACE KELLY and PRINCE RAINIER of Monaco, JOHN F. KENNEDY JR.
and CAROLYN BESSETTE, ELVIS and PRISCILLA PRESLEY, JENNIFER LOPEZ and MARC
ANTHONY, MADONNA and GUY RITCHIE, and several more. But tonight, "The
Insider" is counting down the most elaborate nuptials of 2006!
First up is the union of "Tomkat," aka TOM
CRUISE & KATIE HOLMES. The most anticipated wedding of the year took
place at Castello Odescalchi in the village of Bracciano, Italy, just
after sunset on Saturday, Nov. 18th. Katie Holmes wore a fitted ARMANI
off-the-shoulder bridal gown with a train in ivory silk caddis adorned in
VALENCIENNES lace and SWAROVSKI-beaded crystal embroidery, featuring a
delicate crinoline frill at the shoulders and a silk soleil border around
the hem. The official wedding party included Cruise's children, ISABELLA
and CONNOR. The best man was Cruise's best friend, DAVID MISCAVIGE, and
the matron of honor was Holmes' sister, NANCY BLAYLOCK. Holmes' and
Cruise's wedding rings were made by CARTIER and are white gold with
diamonds. Celebrity guests attending the wedding of the year included
BROOKE SHIELDS, JENNIFER LOPEZ and hubby MARC ANTHONY, DAVID and VICTORIA
BECKHAM, WILL SMITH and wife JADA PINKETT SMITH, JIM CARREY and girlfriend
JENNY McCARTHY, CATHERINE BELL and JENNA ELFMAN.
NICOLE KIDMAN & KEITH URBAN: Not to be outdone,
Tom's ex had her own fairy-tale ceremony when she married the country
music star on June 25th in Sydney, Australia. The bride looked like a
princess in a long, traditional veil and a romantic, ivory BALENCIAGA
dress with an empire waist and exquisite pearl drop earrings. Her hair was
long and curly, and she carried white roses in her hand. To match, Keith
also tucked a white rose into the lapel of his black suit. The
star-studded ceremony took place at Cardinal Cerretti Memorial Chapel on
the St. Patrick Estate, with Nicole's father, ANTONY KIDMAN, reportedly
walking her down the aisle. Nicole's sister, ANTONIA KIDMAN, was the
matron of honor; Keith's brother SHANE was the best man. Father PAUL
COLEMAN, an old friend of Nicole's and her family's, conducted the
service. Many friends and family attended the intimate event, including
Nicole's two children, 13-year-old Isabella and 11-year-old Connor -- whom
she shares with former spouse Tom Cruise -- and fellow Aussies HUGH
JACKMAN, NAOMI WATTS and media mogul RUPERT MURDOCH.
TORI SPELLING & DEAN McDERMOTT" The couple's
May 7th wedding was an intimate affair, attended only by Tori and Dean;
the love-smitten couple reportedly couldn't wait to get married and
skipped traditional formalities. Instead, they opted for a
non-denominational ceremony on a private island in Fiji. Both bride and
groom went barefoot and wore white. The blonde heiress became engaged to
Dean in December 2005. The couple met earlier that year while working
together on the TV movie "Mind Over Murder," and had been dating
for several months. They are now expecting their first child.
CHRISTOPHER KNIGHT & ADRIANNE CURRY: There was
both laughter and tears at what may have been the biggest wedding in
Joliet, IL, this past summer when former "Brady" boy Christopher
Knight married "America's Next Top Model" winner Adrianne Curry
on May 29. The newlyweds met and fell in love on "The Surreal
Life," and their relationship then played out on their own show,
"My Fair Brady," on VH1. Chris, of course, is just one year
younger than Adrianne's dad, so there is a 25-year difference in their
ages. But that didn't stop the determined bride from getting a commitment
from her man! "I wanted to go for a Phantom of the Opera theme,"
Adrianne told ET, which was exclusively behind the scenes of her big day. |
The "My Fair Brady" star opted for a
cream-colored, strapless gown from ALVINA VALENTA, while the groom wore a
traditional black tux with a blood-red rose boutonniere, which matched the
flowers that bedecked the church and the candles, all of which were the same
dark burgundy color. In addition to the bride and groom's family and friends,
Chris' fellow castmates from "The Brady Bunch" turned out for the
event, including BARRY WILLIAMS, SUSAN OLSEN and MIKE LOOKINLAND.
MARCIA CROSS & TOM MAHONEY: "Desperate
Housewives" star Marcia Cross tied the knot on June 24, marrying wealth
manager Tom Mahoney in a peaceful ceremony with no TV catfights and plenty of
her Wisteria pals present. The couple said their "I do's" in front of
approximately 100 invited guests at The Church of Our Savior in San Gabriel, CA,
with wedding bells ringing to signal the vows were complete at 6:05 p.m. Marcia
wore a beautiful, off-white dress by designer REEM ACRA with her hair down. She
had a peony corsage, and was completely dripping in NEIL LANE (who was present)
jewelry: a diamond bracelet; 3 to 4 inch-long platinum, pear-shaped diamond drop
earrings, about five carats each; and a diamond pendant with a three-carat
diamond pear containing a heart-shaped, five-carat diamond in the middle.
"Desperate" co-star EVA LONGORIA was among the wedding guests, wearing
an olive-green dress and arriving with basketball beau TONY PARKER in a BMW.
Co-star FELICITY HUFFMAN and hubby WILLIAM H. MACY were also there to witness
the union, along with several male "Housewives" cast members.
And, finally, in an unconventional union, ANNA NICOLE SMITH
and her longtime attorney, HOWARD K. STERN, were united in a commitment ceremony
at sea in November in the Bahamas. The two escaped the press hubbub surrounding
her compound with Anna Nicole's baby girl and boarded a catamaran sailboat,
where they pledged their love for one another. After that, the happy twosome
both jumped fully clothed into the water and swam to a nearby beach.
Also married this year were PINK and CAREY HART, JACK BLACK
and TANYA HADEN, PATRICIA ARQUETTE and THOMAS JANE, AVRIL LAVIGNE and DERYCK
WHIBLEY, JAY McGRAW and ERICA DAHM, TAMYRA GRAY and SAM WATTERS, AMANDA PEET and
DAVID BENIOFF, and TIM ALLEN and JANE HAJDUK.
