Hip Hop Bling
By Allison Samuels found at Newsweek
Sept. 14, 2007
Last summer you could barely escape the thumping beats
of the monster hit anthem “Riding Dirty’’ by Houston-born rapper
Chamillionaire. The hypnotic tune (which also featured rapper Krazyie Bone)
took shots at No small feat given his album just narrowly escaped being caught in the middle the hype/sales face off between Kanye West and 50 Cent. But is Chamillionaire worried about his album sales suffering in the aftermath of the two motor-mouth giants? Not in the least. Here he tells NEWSWEEK’s Allison Samuels how he got into the rap game, how he got his mother to finally listen to rap music and why he knows he’ll be around for the long haul. Excerpts: NEWSWEEK: “Riding Dirty” took off like

Hip-hop: No soul, all blingfound at www.badgerherald.com What happened in the short span of a decade? Simple: music for profit. Rap artists appear on MTV wearing $500,000 in jewelry which, in turn, influences young aspiring artists to buy their albums so they can learn to how to become rich, too. This, of course, leads to rappers becoming wealthier and wearing more bling. And the cycle continues. You may notice the rappers of today who do not rap about money, their mic skillz or how many bitches they have generally 1) do not showcase these in their videos on MTV and thus 2) do not get their videos played on MTV. Did anyone see Common’s video for “Testify” on MTV more than once? Here is a song that tells a story and has a twist at the end (i.e., engaging lyrical content) and was almost never played. Why not? The song peaked at No. 44 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles Chart. Furthermore, the song is only 2½ minutes long. Since Clear Channel owns the dial (a tempting rant, but for another time) and likes songs under four minutes, you would think “Testify” would have been played more often, if only for that reason. MTV, becoming an infomercial channel more and more by the day, loves short videos as well. The video for “Testify” is nine minutes long, but was edited down to just under five for air. Thus, one can reasonably assume that at least a part of the unpopularity of this fantastic rap song could be attributed to its lack of bling. Hip
